ELECTIONS: Yeovil MP welcomes Council Tax cut in South Somerset

YEOVIL MP David Laws has welcomed the news that the Liberal Democrat controlled South Somerset District Council has cut Council Tax for residents in South Somerset by nearly two per cent.

The decision was made at the annual budget meeting held on Thursday (February 26, 2015) and comes after the council had frozen its share of the Council Tax for the preceding five years.ELECTIONS: Yeovil MP welcomes Council Tax cut in South Somerset

The cut means that the average Band D property Council Tax level for 2015-16 in South Somerset will be £147.75.

Mr Laws said: “This is fantastic news for people in South Somerset and shows that the District Council is not only delivering strong services but sound finances.

‘The Liberal Democrat councillors running the District Council have done a brilliant job over the last five years, ensuring that residents can rely on the services they provide while at the same time freezing council tax for households in our area.

‘Now the district council has gone further and cut Council Tax for South Somerset residents, a move which will give households a very welcome helping hand in these difficult times.’

The overall Council Tax bill which will start falling through letterboxes, however, is made up of five parts. Somerset County Council takes the lion’s share of the bill with other contributions made by Avon and Somerset Police, the district council, parish/town council and the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

The overall Council Tax bill for a Band D property in Yeovil, for example, for 2015-16 will be £1,523.82.

Elections for the district council and town and parish councils in South Somerset will be held on the same day as the General Election – Thursday, May 7, 2015.
