BUSINESS: Firms urged to be on guard against bogus calls

BOGUS calls are being made to businesses in South Somerset telling them they are due a Council Tax refund and asking for their bank details.

If you get a call from someone saying they are from the council and asking for your bank details to give you a refund, please do not give out your bank details.

Ask the caller for their name and telephone number and say you will call them back, then telephone South Somerset District Council on 01935-462462 and ask for the Revenues Team. The team can check your account to see if you are due a refund and let you know how it will be paid.

If you pay your Council Tax to SSDC by direct debit, the council will already have your bank details. And if you pay by another method, the council would send you a refund cheque.

The council’s revenues and benefits spokesman, Cllr Peter Seib, said: “Telephone scams are prevalent at the moment and, in this case, they are promising a refund of Council Tax. It is important that you do not pass on any bank account details.”
