SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Yeovil MP welcomes General Election

YEOVIL MP Marcus Fysh has welcomed the shock news that a General Election is to be held on Thursday, June 8, 2017.

Prime Minister Theresa May made the surprise announcement shortly after 11am on Tuesday (April 18, 2017).

And Mr Fysh, who won the Yeovil seat for the Conservatives from the Liberal Democrats back in 2015, said: “This is positive news for the South West and the country as a whole.

“For the last year there has only been one party looking to secure the best possible future for all of us and that’s the Conservatives.

“Other political parties are trying to block the will of the people; the unelected Lords are doing the same.

“Theresa May is a strong and sensible leader and the country needs to come together behind her now as we forge a new relationship with our neighbours and maintain our global outlook.”

Mr Fysh added: “Locally only the Conservatives will keep delivering on our agenda for investment in infrastructure and jobs.”

It is expected that Mr Fysh’s main rival at the election in the Yeovil Constituency will be from the Liberal Democrats’ Daisy Benson.

The last election in May 2015 saw the Conservatives poll 24,158 votes in Yeovil to beat outgoing LibDem MP David Laws by 5,293 votes.

The Yeovil Constituency includes Yeovil, Ilminster, Chard and Crewkerne.
