A CAT had to be put to sleep in Somerset after being found in “excruciating pain” after getting caught in a barbaric trap which had been placed in a garden.SOMERSET NEWS: Cat put to sleep after getting caught in barbaric illegal trap

Langport Veterinary Centre reported on social media on Monday (March 13, 2017) about the “distressing case” it had to deal with last week.

“A member of the public, who lives in Langport, rang our practice to report a cat that was caught in a trap in their garden,” said a centre spokesman.

“When the veterinary surgeon and nurse arrived it was found that it was in fact an illegal trap – known as a gin trap.”

The spokesman added: “The trap is large, heavy and extremely dangerous – so as you can imagine the cat was in excruciating pain.

“Sadly as a result of the trauma the trap had caused, the kindest decision for the case was to carry out euthanasia on it.”

The RSPCA has been informed and officers are investigating the upsetting incident.

“We ask for anybody with any information about who could have set this illegal trap to please contact us on 01458-250459, the RSPCA or call police on 101.”

The gin traps clamp down on an unsuspecting animals legs and are still being used despite them being banned in 1958.

Wildlife experts have said that the gin traps horrendously maim the animals meaning they often must be put down – such as the cat in Langport in this latest example.

Langport Veterinary Centre has asked for people to spread the news about this terrible incident.
