YEOVIL NEWS: Three years in prison for drug dealer

YEOVIL drug dealer Edward New, who had stashed heroin in his rectum, was jailed for three years yesterday (Thursday, April 9, 2015).

The 31-year-old from Cavalier Walk was found with nearly eight grammes of heroin valued at £850, and diazepam tablets valued at £535 were found at his home.

He appeared at Taunton Crown Court to hear his sentence after his arrest in June last year. He received three years for possession with intent to supply the heroin, and eight months for possession with intent to supply the diazepam which will run concurrently.YEOVIL NEWS: Three years in prison for drug dealer

Investigating officer PC George Pettingell, speaking after the hearing, said: “The sentence reflects the severity of the crime and goes to show that we will continue to target those who ply their trade selling illegal drugs in the Yeovil area.

“Thanks to the support of the local community we have removed another drug dealer from the streets.

“New had secreted the heroin inside his anus which goes to show that drug dealers will go to any lengths to hide their activities from police.

“Financial investigations established that New had banked large sums of cash, which he could not account for and were almost certainly the proceeds of his drug dealing.

“Drug dealing causes many issues in a local community such as anti-social behaviour and violence, and many people live in fear as a result. We will continue to work alongside our partner agencies and members of the public to prosecute anyone who is involved in this toxic business.”

New pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and received full credit for it when sentenced.

Police have made a Proceeds of Crime Act application to ensure money shown to have been earned illegally is recovered by the confiscation of New's assets.
