Fire investigation officers and police crime scene investigators have this evening confirmed that the cause of the blaze at Coxhill Farm at North Newton, near North Petherton, was “deliberate.”

The alarm was raised at just before 4am to the fire at the building which had a thatched roof with eyewitnesses saying that the flames could be seen for miles away. Thankfully, it is understood that the property was empty at the time of the fire.

Firefighters from Bridgwater, Taunton, Burnham, Wellington, Nether Stowey and Ilminster were mobilised.

Further support with a high volume pump from Taunton, an aerial ladder and water carrier from Bridgwater, and an incident support unit from Street were also sent.

Crews arrived at the scene and found the property fully involved in the fire.

The two-storey detached property had an annex attached, but was later demolished by a mechanical digger due to it being unsafe.

Anyone with information about who was responsible for the fire can call police on 101.
