SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Carnival cash is given out to groups

DONATIONS worth £2,300 have been handed out to local groups and organisations by the South Petherton Carnival Committee.

The Carnival group held its annual meeting last night (Tuesday, October 7, 2014) at the Blake Hall where out-going chairman Dave Williams was able to present cheques to representatives of donation recipients.

Among those to receive donations were the Babes and Tots group, Burnworthy Retirement Home, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service charity, South Petherton FC, Ilminster Lions,  Youth Parish Council, Youth Club and Reach project, South Petherton Infants and Pre-School, South Petherton Junior School, Scouts, the Vanessa Project, St John Ambulance, Sunshine Morning Nursery, South Petherton Cricket Club, Martock Girl Guides and brownies, and the Hassockmore Childcare & Out of School Club.SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Carnival cash is given out to groups

Prize money was also distributed to the Carnival entries who won the various categories during last month’s successful parade.

Mr Williams said that the collection on Carnival night was down on previous years due to the absence of a street collecting float.

The money raised over the year by the committee amounted to more than £7,500 with the biggest revenue-earner being the 2014 Carnival programme through sales and advertising.

The annual duck race at Easter raised more than £1,000 although Mr Williams said that they would have to buy some new plastic yellow ducks due to a number floating on down the fast-flowing stream at a rapid rate of knots because of torrential rain - and they have kept on swimming!

The committee thanked everyone for their continued support of South Petherton Carnival.
