YEOVIL NEWS: Plans for public worship – not drug-using and prostitution!

FEARS that a proposed centre in Yeovil could attract “drug-users and prostitutes” should be allayed this week with news that it is intended to become a place for “public worship or religious instruction.”

Members of Yeovil Town Council’s planning and licensing committee meet on Tuesday (August 26, 2014) to discuss the application submitted by Boon Brown for the change of use of buildings at the Yeovil Vehicle Centre in Sherborne Road, Yeovil.YEOVIL NEWS: Plans for public worship – not drug-using and prostitution!

At first the application for the site – currently operated by Aardvark Auto Services Ltd for a mechanics garage and used-car sales - was for the straight-forward change of use to a “non-residential institution” which covers a wide range of uses.

The planning department at South Somerset District Council had received some concerns from nearby residents about what the site would be used for – especially as they were under the impression that it might be used as a community centre.

One resident said: “As I am sure you know Yeovil has a drug-user problem and we would not want to be living near a drug rehabilitation centre for example.

“It was bad enough when drug dealers and prostitutes were residing nearby last year and we had potential customers for both knocking on our front door.”

But councillors will be told tomorrow (Tuesday, August 26, 2014) evening that the intended use for the site is now more specific with the application referring to “public worship or religious instruction” – although there are no further details included in the online documents.

A final decision on the proposals will be made by South Somerset District Council.
