SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Man arrrested at Ilminster over unlawful entry of people into UK

A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of helping the unlawful entry of people into the UK following today’s (Tuesday, August 19, 2014) incident in Ilminster involving a lorry-load of immigrants.

Police received several calls earlier this afternoon raising concerns about noises coming from the back of a lorry.

Officers stopped the lorry at a service station on the A303 Southfields Roundabout at Ilminster at about 1pm.

A total of 15 people were found on-board – including men, women and a 15-year-old boy. They have told officers that they are from Eritrea and Kashmir.

A police spokesman told the Yeovil Press: “They were checked over by paramedics at the scene, but there are no ongoing concerns over their health or well-being and they’ve been provided with medical support and supplies.

“We’re now liaising with the local authority to manage their ongoing welfare needs.”

The lorry, which originated in mainland Europe, has been seized as part of our investigation.

The spokesman added: “A man, who is from Germany, has been arrested on suspicion of facilitating the unlawful entry of people into the UK.”
