A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman told the Yeovil Press: “The first message from the incident reported that there was smoke issuing from the roof of a two-storey domestic thatched property.

“A short time later two further fire crews were requested.  They were mobilised from Shepton Mallet and Sherborne, while an environmental protection unit was also requested which was mobilised from South Molton.

“The fire was fanned by strong winds so, at the height of the incident, the roof was fully involved in fire.”

Western Power attended to isolate overhead power lines, while an ambulance was requested to treat one male with smoke inhalation.  A further ambulance was mobilised to standby at incident for fire fighter safety, while the police attended for traffic control.

The British Red Cross Fire and Emergency Service Support crew was also requested to attend to offer support to residents.
