SOMERSET NEWS: Rape victim urged to come forward

DETECTIVES investigating a historic allegation of rape in Somerset are making a final plea for the victim to contact them.

In March officers first asked a woman to contact them after she wrote anonymously to the police about a rape in Taunton in 1968.

The victim first got in touch with the independent charity Crimestoppers before writing letters to both Avon and Somerset Police and Devon and Cornwall Police.SOMERSET NEWS: Rape victim urged to come forward

An investigation into the allegation made to police has been taking place and based on the information in those letters they have made some progress. But they now need to speak to the victim in person before we can proceed any further.

Detective Constable Peter Williamson, from Taunton CID, said: “This victim has taken the courageous first step in telling us about her experience by speaking to Crimestoppers and writing letters to us.

"However, we’ve now done all that we can do until we speak to the victim so I need her to contact me so that we can support her, update her on our investigation and speak to her about the ordeal she was put through all those years ago. Today I’m making one final plea for her to get in touch.”

The victim should contact DC Peter Williamson on 101.
