A STUDENT at Westfield Academy in Yeovil is in the running to win a Woman with Heart Award organised by the British Heart Foundation.

In honour of International Women’s Day on March 8, 2014, the BHF charity has singled out just a few of the women who have made an exceptional commitment to helping heart patients.

Since performing CPR to save her mum’s life, Westfield student Samantha Hobbs has campaigned tirelessly for others to learn the same life-saving skills in schools - rallying support from friends and family, writing to the Prime Minister, and creating a petition that led to a meeting with the Education Minister.

She also organised CPR training last year for a group of students in school.

A spokesman for Westfield Academy said: “We are really proud to announce that Sam is one of just ten individuals who have been nominated for a British Heart Foundation ‘Woman with Heart’ Award.Vote now for Westfield Academy life-saver Samantha

Last year Sam, then aged 14, won a Pride of Somerset Youth Award in recognition of her brave actions in which she kept a cool head and used skills she had learnt in life-saving classes to perform CPR on her mother, who had suffered a heart attack, until the ambulance paramedics arrived.
