MOTORISTS are being urged to take extra caution when using a main road in and out of Yeovil because it is littered with large potholes.Take care on the Pothole Mile!

The busy A37  Ilchester Road, which links Ilchester and Yeovil, has been hit hard in recent weeks by flooding, heavy rain and strong winds.

Now the road surface is beginning to crumble and there are plenty of ever-increasing potholes along the road – especially between Ilchester and the Halfway House pub on the corner of the junction with Vagg Lane.

The stretch of the road has been plagued with flooding problems, but this morning (Monday, January 6, 2014) has been clear – although drivers now have to be alert to avoid the potholes.

One driver told the Yeovil Press: "It's really bad along Ilchester Road - you have to weave in and out of the potholes! Some of them are really big and I can only see them getting bigger if they aren't repaired quickly. It's like a mile of potholes along there!"

Somerset County Council has the responsibility of repairing roads and it has asked people to notify them of pothole problems.

The authority is bracing itself for an influx of reports because of the continued bad weather.

Anyone wanting to report a problem can contact the highways department at County Hall on 0845-345-9155.

The council’s website will also give details of how motorists can claim against the authority if they have suffered damage to their vehicles due to an unrepaired pothole or road defect.
