The ceremony will take place in the Quedam Shopping Centre at 6.30pm where Father Christmas is likely to join a host of guests and hundreds of late-night shoppers to signal the start of the countdown to the festive season.

The honour of switching the lights on will rest with Yeovil College student Jack Goodland, 16, who won the Against the Odds category at the recent Gold Star awards hosted by South Somerset District Council at the Octagon Theatre in Yeovil.

Jack has not let a kidney transplant put him off from being a talented young sportsman and he took part in the World Transplant Games in South Africa in July where he picked up a couple of medals.

He will be joined tonight for the switching-on ceremony by a Harry Styles look-a-like of One Direction, plus local dignitaries and members of Yeovil Town FC.

There will other activities and musical entertainment on during the evening as well as late-night shopping.

Merry Christmas!
