Fears overgrown vegetation makes roundabout a hazard

A COMPLAINT has been made about an overgrown traffic island - which serves a busy out-of-town retail park in Yeovil - with claims it is a hazard for motorists.

Members of Brympton Parish Council heard on Wednesday (October 23, 2013) night that there had been grumblings about the vegetation which was growing on the island at the busy roundabout on the Abbey Manor estate serving the Houndstone Retail Park, Western Avenue and Stourton Way.

Councillors were told that the “vegetation was a hazard” and that it had nearly led to an accident because it was hindering drivers’ vision.

But parish clerk, Liz James, said: “Somerset County Council like the islands like that because it slows people down.”

It was argued, however, that better visibility would add to the safety of road-users.

But Cllr Peter Seib said: “Research has shown that if you make people uncertain they will slow down.

“Making things easier is actually the wrong thing to do.”
