Thousands break speed limit in West Coker Road

THOUSANDS of motorists were found to be speeding along West Coker Road in Yeovil during a 14-day period in August.

There have been constant concerns about the speed of vehicles along the 30mph road – one of the main routes into Yeovil.Thousands break speed limit in West Coker Road

And the latest Speed Indicator Device readings carried out by Somerset County Council show that there is still little to cheer about.

Members of Yeovil Town Council’s buildings and civic matters committee will hear tomorrow (Tuesday, September 17) that a total of 44,025 traffic speeds were recorded between August 1-14 this year.

But the records show that only 15,045 were within the 30mph speed limit, while 26,342 were found to be travelling under 40mph.

A total of 2,376 were found to be speeding between 40mph and 50mph, while 262 were travelling at over 50mph.

Town council clerk, Alan Tawse, said: “The county council has recently confirmed that they have carried out further work into the options available along West Coker Road and the designer has recommended that central hatching could be used to narrow the carriageway.

“However, it has been pointed out that this would not assist pedestrian movements and therefore a controlled crossing could be considered.”
