Speeding concerns in St John's Road

PEOPLE living along St John’s Road in Yeovil believe that traffic calming measures are totally ineffective at stopping motorists from speeding.

Residents living in the highly-populated area of the town are concerned that many drivers speed along the road.Speeding concerns in St John's Road

They have brought the matter to the attention of Yeovil MP David Laws and Cllr Tony Lock, of Yeovil Town Council, during a recent advice surgery.

Police believe that since the road was resurfaced, much of the traffic calming measures put in place by the town council are not having the desired results and do nothing to slow down vehicles.

They have also said that the parking by coaches and cars on double yellow lines outside Buckler’s Mead Academy are also causing obstructions.

The council has contacted the Highway Authority for its views on these specific matters and members of the buildings and civic matters committee will discuss their response tomorrow (Tuesday, September 17) night.

A spokesman for the Highways Authority said: “You will appreciate that St John’s Road is long and extends from St Michael’s Avenue to Lyde Road.

“It is difficult to give any specific observations on claims of speeding without taking a speed survey at appropriate locations.

“However, given the nature of the road I would suggest that speeds are likely to be relatively higher east of its junction of Birchfield Road where the road is straighter.”

They said that some speed cushions at the eastern end of St John’s Road had been removed because they had been damaged.

“There may be a case for considering additional traffic calming measures,” the spokesman added, while the parking outside Buckler’s MeadAcademy would “appear to be an enforcement issue.”

Town clerk Alan Tawse is asking councillors to see if they would like to make a response to the statement from the Highway Authority.
