Team Archie rides into Ivel to a hero's welcome!

CYCLISTS rode into Ivel Barbarians RFC in Yeovil yesterday (Sunday, September 15) tired and weary – but delighted – having cycled from Land’s End to raise money for the CLIC Sargent charity which has supported a youth team player and his family.

It was back in October 2012 when Max Mitchell, happily playing in the centre for Ivel Under-13s, was suddenly diagnosed with leukaemia.Team Archie rides into Ivel to a hero's welcome!

By November 2012 he was having chemotherapy drugs injected directly into his heart and he was starting a battle with the disease which will go on for at least three years.

His elder brother Archie, who plays for Ivel Under-15s, wanted to do something to help, so he decided to ride from Land's End to the White Horse pub at Haselbury Plucknett in aid of CLIC, the charity that has supported the Mitchell family so well over the past ten months.

Martin Jakes, the club’s Under-14s coach, said: “This spiralled and there were around 20 riders doing the event either from the Mitchell family or the rugby club including a number of juniors.”

The cyclists completed the 210-mile ride on Sunday where they arrived at Ivel to a hero’s welcome where Max’s team-mates had just played Taunton in a match. They then cycled on to the White Horse at Haselbury for lunch.

They took three days to complete the route and included a gruelling day over Dartmoor with 8,000ft of climbing.

The riders were – as per Ivel’s website – as follows: Archie Mitchell, Max Mitchell, Simon Mitchell, Martin Jakes, Harry Jakes, Andy Jarvis, Dan Jarvis, Chris Hall, Wilf Hall, Chris Paul, Chris Burton, Ray Rawbone, Colin Rawbone, Andy Pett, Mark Iredale, Graham Beggin, Jane Potterill, Izzie Potterill, Simon Martin, Artie Martin, Richard Brett and Brian Charlton.

Anyone wanting to contribute to the appeal total can do so by going online to the Team Archie Just Giving page which can be found here - www.justgiving.com/Archie-Mitchell .
