Church to hold services at Cineworld!

CINEWORLD in Yeovil is more used to hosting the world’s latest blockbuster movies starring Hollywood’s finest – but now the cinema complex is preparing to welcome a much more local performer, Rev Howard Davenport and the Elim Pentecostal Church.

While the auditoriums of Cineworld at the Yeo Leisure Park are popular with visitors wanting to watch Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, Tom Hanks and Brad Pitt in film action – now they are going to get the chance to see ‘live’ Rev Davenport (pictured above with musician Joshua McSevney) fill the place with his wise words and stories from the Bible.

The Elim Pentecostal church building is being modernised and in an unusual move, officials have decided to use Yeovil’s multiplex cinema during the work.Church to hold services at Cineworld!

The work on their main building in Southville has already begun, but from September 15 the main auditorium will be out of bounds and they will be using Cineworld for their 10.30am service.

Most of the church’s packed programme, including Sunday evening services, weekly children’s and youth activities will take place at the smaller Elim building on Larkhill Road, but for the larger Sunday morning event they have been in negotiations with cinema bosses to use one of their screens as a church.

Revd Howard Davenport the Pastor at the Elim Church said, “I’m pretty sure Jesus would have spent some time at the cinema, either on screen or catching up with the crowds on Cheap Tuesday, so it’s exciting for us to be in this very public venue.

“There are no hymnbooks these days,  it’s all multimedia,  so the cinema is an ideal venue for us.  Our services are already pretty relaxed and family friendly, but by moving to the popular Cineworld venue, our Church should be even more accessible”

The church will be meeting at the cinema until Christmas, by when they expect the building work will be complete.
