Around 20,000 people in Yeovil and surrounding area, including across the county border into Dorset and Sherborne, suffered the power loss due to a fault at a local sub-station at around 1pm.

But Southern Electric Power Distribution has now said that the normal service has been resumed.

“Power has now been restored to all homes affected,” said a company spokesman. “Sorry for any inconvenience caused by this afternoon’s interruption.”

Town centre shops in Yeovil had to shut because of the power cut while motorists faced problems with traffic lights failing.

The power company got the electric back working again at about 4pm this afternoon.
