What a load of rubbish! Garden waste collections put on hold

GARDEN rubbish collections are being suspended in Yeovil and South Somerset to help crews catch up with waste services disrupted by the recent snow and ice. What a load of rubbish! Garden waste collections put on hold

Somerset Waste Partnership managing director Steve Read has asked residents to be patient - especially those with garden waste collections in South Somerset and other district areas of Mendip and Taunton Deane.

He said: "Collection crews are working many extra hours to return collections to normal as soon as possible.

“We have faced days of disruption due to the bad weather and have suspended garden waste collections from in Mendip, South Somerset and Taunton Deane.

"Quantities of garden waste being put out have been very low and these collection crews and vehicles will be much more effective in helping clear any backlog of missed refuse collections.

“Scheduled garden waste services should resume within two weeks and we fully expect that it will be much sooner, therefore we hope to limit disruption to those on this paid-for service to a minimum.”

An update will be given by SWP when garden waste collections resume.

Garden waste can be taken to recycling sites for composting, but in poor weather please check sites are open.

Householders are reminded that in bad weather, refuse and recycling should continue to be put out by 7am on usual collection days.

If missed due to bad weather, please put out recycling by 7am for up to three working days and refuse by 7am for up to five working days.

If still missed after that, take back in, as SWP will then return on your next usual collection day and will take extra materials.

The garden waste collection service is not being suspended in Sedgemoor and West Somerset at the current time, but this is under review.

Full information on current services and catch-up arrangements are posted on Somerset Waste Partnership's website at: www.somersetwaste.gov.uk
