Abbie, 28, joined the Royal Navy in 2004 aged 20 as a dental surgery assistant but is now more used to being behind the camera as Yeovilton's photographer when she transferred to the branch in 2008. Her diverse role includes photos for printed media to frontline operational support.

Becky, 24, followed her sister and joined the Royal Navy in 2006 aged 18 as a Navy writer. As a leading writer, Becky is currently responsible for administering Human Resource requirements to HMS Heron's personnel.

The Herron sisters have enjoyed a variety of deployments during their careers so far. Becky has served onboard HMS Illustrious, Defence Human Intelligence Unit Chicksands and a recent tour of Afghanistan before joining HMS Heron.

Becky said: “I have had a fantastic career so far with lots of opportunities to be part of what I grew up with. I absolutely love working here with Abbie, it is the first time in both our careers that we have worked in the same place. It’s so nice being close to each other as we are very close as sisters.”

Abbie has been deployed on Operations in Libya, the Middle East and public relations with HMS St Albans in Iceland.

Abbie said: “I would never have though that I would have done so much already since joining as a Dental assistant in 2008. I thought it would be teeth all the way but changing to the photographic branch has quiet literally opened up a whole new world.

''The sense of belonging in the Royal Navy is like no other. Being in the Royal Navy has given me great experiences and opportunities. Becky and I had hoped to be posted together for some years. Here at RNAS Yeovilton not only gives me a varied and happy posting but with the added of bonus of sharing it with my sister.”

Abbie and Becky were destined to join the Royal Navy with their grandfather Norman Herron serving in both the Merchant and Royal Navy, and father Mick Herron serving a total of 28 years in the Royal Marines.

Dad Mick Herron says: “I am very proud, happy and privileged not only to have two beautiful, sensible daughters but that they had the insight to join the Navy and carry on the family tradition”
