Princes Street works nearing completion

THE majority of work on the Princes Street enhancement project in the centre of Yeovil should be finished by the end of this week, according to a leading member of South Somerset District Council.  Princes Street works nearing completion

And Cllr Tony Fife, chairman of the council's Area South committee, said today that the overall project would be completed by the middle of next week.

It was announced in early November that work would be carried out in Princes Street and Park Road to carry out resurfacing work and create a pedestiran crossing as part of an ongoing enhancement project.

The roads had been closed to traffic over several nights to allow for work to proceed, but Cllr Fife admitted today that the work had taken longer than expected because of the bad weather conditions.

''Work is nearing completion, but there have been problems because of the weather,'' he said.

''But the main work will be finished by the end of this week, with everything else completed by the middle of next week.''

But he added: ''A lot depends on the weather.''

The scheme builds on the proposals set out for Phase Two of the enhancement works. The funding for these works comes from South Somerset District Council’s Area South Committee, Yeovil Vision, Yeovil Town Council and Somerset County Council.

Last month Cllr Fife said that the road closures were not ideal, but hoped the 'disruption' would be minimal due to the night-time closing.

And he added: ''The completed works will positively enhance the visual impact of the area and ensure that all the businesses and visitors to Princes Street can enjoy the high standards set by the previous highly successful enhancement of the southern end of the street. We apologise for any inconvenience caused but it will be kept to an absolute minimum.”
