South Somerset District Council has become aware that someone is making fales calls to businesses saying they are due a Business Rates refund and asking for their bank details.

A council spokesman said: ''If you pay your Business Rates by direct debit we already have your bank details. If you pay another way we will send you a refund cheque. This is also true for Council Tax payers.

''If you get a call from someone saying they are from the council asking for your bank details to give you a refund, stop and think. Do not give out your bank details.

''Ask the caller for their name and telephone number and say you will call them back. Our telephone number is 01935-462462. Call this number and ask for the Revenues Team. They can check your account to see if you are due a refund and let you know how we will pay it to you.''

The council's Executive vice-chairman, Cllr Tim Carroll, said: ''Telephone scams are prevalent at the moment, and in this case they are promising a refund of Business Rates. It is important that you do not pass on any bank account details.”
