YEOVIL NEWS: Extension needed for Yeovil Cemetery as burial plots run out

TALKS are underway about increasing the size of Yeovil Cemetery with ongoing concerns that it is running out of space for burials.

Members of the Yeovil Crematorium and Cemetery Committee will be meeting on Wednesday (January 18, 2017) where they will discuss the ever-worsening problem of running out of burial space at the cemetery in Preston Road.

A report said that there are now just 49 grave spaces left at the cemetery, although cemetery staff are removing hedges in order to try and make space for more plots.

But it is understood that the property team at Somerset County Council is willing to discuss a potential cemetery extension on an adjoining Fiveways site.

Chris Cooper, of South Somerset District Council, speaking in a report, said: “We will investigate this if this is the wish of the members. We predict that this could offer 14 years of new grave spaces for the future.”

Latest figures show that there have been five new graves at the cemetery since September 2016 which would mean, on that basis, the site could be completely full in just over three years time.

The Yeovil Cemetery in Preston Road dates back to 1860.
