YEOVIL AREA NEWS: Cartgate link road to close at night for roadworks

SOMERSET County Council has announced that the main busy Cartgate Link Road from the A303 into Yeovil will be closed for night-time roadworks beginning late next month.

The council, as the Highway Authority, has received an application for the temporary closure of the A3088 Cartgate road from Monday, July 25, 2016, for “reconstruction and carriageway resurfacing” to be carried aout.

The work is expected to last for five weeks with night-time working between 7pm and 7am.

A council spokesman said: “Every effort will be made to keep the duration of this closure to a minimum to reduce any further disruption.”

While the road is closed at night, motorists wanting to move in and out of Yeovil, are being advised to use the Ilchester junction on the A303. Local drivers will know other routes as well.

The A3088 Cartgate Link Road is showing signs of significant structural failure with numerous cracks and settlement across the carriageway.

It was announced earlier this year that Somerset County Council planned to reconstruct and resurface sections of the road.

Cllr David Fothergill, Somerset County Council’s spokesman for highways, said: “It’s always challenging to carry out major repairs on main strategic roads, but it is far less disruptive and more cost effective in the long-term to do this work properly rather than continually revisiting a site for temporary repairs.

“This work will greatly improve the condition of this vital link and provide a much smoother, safer journey for all. We’re trying to avoid daytime closures wherever possible, but please be aware of the potential for delays and plan your journey accordingly.

"I know this comes after other recent work in Yeovil, but it’s unavoidable and all about making sure that a growing town like Yeovil has an infrastructure that works, both to cope with current demands and to prepare the town for future development.”
