SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Firefighters battle bedroom fire

A LIGHTED candle is believed to have started a fire in the early hours of this morning (Friday, April 6, 2016) at a home in Somerset.

Firefighters from across the area have been helping out after the alarm was raised to the problem at a property in Broadway Road, Charlton Adam, in South Somerset.

Three fire engines from Somerton, Castle Cary and Yeovil were initially mobilised and on arrival the firefighters discovered that the flames were breaking through a window of the three-storey detached property.

A fourth fire engine was mobilised from Martock along with an incident command unit from Street.

Firefighters reported that all persons from inside the home were safe and clear of danger, although the Ambulance Service was called due to a female suffering from smoke inhalation.

The fire was located in a first-floor bedroom and officers checked to make sure that it was not spreading to a neighbouring property.

A further incident support unit from Yeovil was mobilised along with the Fire and Emergency Support Service from the Red Cross.

By 6.30am the fire had been put out and officers damped down any remaining hotspots, while ambulance paramedics assessed the occupants of the building.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “The first was caused by an unattended candle in a first-floor bedroom.

“The bedroom was totally damaged by the fire and the remainder of the property was damaged by smoke.”

By 7am the incident had been scaled down to one fire engine.
