SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Elderly man rescued from flood water

FIREFIGHTERS were called out tonight (Sunday, February 7, 2016) to rescue a man who had got stuck in flood water in his vehicle.

The alarm was raised at just before 8pm to the incident at Ilchester Road in Charlton Mackrell and firefighters from Somerton and Castle Cary were mobilised.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “Crews rescued the elderly male from the car to dry land.

“The police were requested to put a road closure in place just before Lytes Cary – to prevent other drivers from attempting to drive through the flood water.”

The Fire Service has received a high number of calls to weather-related incidents from across the service area over the weekend.

Occupants of several vehicles have been rescued by fire crews after becoming stuck in floodwater. The occupants were taken to safety and advised to contact their vehicle recovery service to recover their vehicles.

Fire Service officials continue to encourage motorists not to risk driving through flood water in case they too get stuck.
