SOUTH SOMERSET: Thatch roof destroyed in house fire

FIREFIGHTERS remain this morning (Thursday, November 5, 2015) at the scene of a home which suffered a devastating thatch roof fire on the outskirts of South Petherton.

Eight fire engines from Martock, Ilminster, Yeovil, Chard and Crewkerne were mobilised last night (Wednesday, November 4, 2015) at just after 7.30pm to reports of a thatched roof on fire at a property in Watergore.

Officers found the roof to be well alight and reported that thankfully all persons had been accounted for at the scene and had evacuated the home.

The fire had spread from the roof to the first floor of the two-storey building, while a welfare unit from Burnham was mobilised along with an incident support unit from Yeovil to take lighting to the scene.

Further relief support came from Taunton, Bridgwater and Castley, while at 5am this morning crews from Somerton and Glastonbury took over to help dampen down any remaining hot spots.

Latest news from the scene at 7am was that the roof and first floor had been 100 per cent damaged by fire with the ground floor being 50 per cent damaged.

A relief crew from Crewkerne had been sent for to continue with the damping down of hot spots.
