THE annual St Bartholomew’s Street Fair came to Crewkerne at the weekend and was blessed with great weather and big crowds.

The town centre was packed with people enjoying the fair brought to the town once again by Edward Danter and a host of other entertainment.SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Great success for street fair in Crewkerne

The Mayor of Crewkerne, Cllr Robin Pailthorpe, officially opened the fair on Friday (September 4, 2015) evening along with the support of Crewkerne Rotary Club’s president Jon Goodwin and the town crier David Craner.

St Bartholomew’s Fair is held each year in Crewkerne and dates back to Saxon times and was recorded in the Domesday Book.

A chartered fair was a major annual regional market and granted the right to be held by the King.

The charter was reputed to have been granted around 1215, but that document was lost and earliest surviving record in the BritishMuseum is a court record of 1280.

There has been a funfair in the main street of the town since at least 1861 which was accompanied by a traders’ market.

The owner of the charter, the Crewkerne Rotary Club, is reviving the street market and following the success of last year increased the number of pitches in the stall market available to traders.
