CLUBS AND SOCIETIES: Ilminster Rotary Club supports ActionAid

PRESIDENT of the Rotary Club of Ilminster, Linda Piggott, was joined by her fellow members this week to meet with Karin Cumming of Chard-based charity ActionAid, at the Shrubbery Hotel to hand over a cheque for £149.

The money had been raised by Linda who had set out to collect her own weight in copper coins. The money raised was used to fund two chickens, two goats and a cow in support of the charity’s important work in Third World countries.

Linda said: “When I first set out to collect my own weight over two years ago I had not appreciated just how long it would take.

“This, of course, was not helped by my weight gain in the meantime, despite the many friends who regularly emptied their spare change out of their pockets to help me reach my target.

“I had not given any thought to what the money might be used for until ActionAid came to give the Rotary Club a talk and I was so impressed by the valuable work they do in helping people to help themselves that it seemed the best option.

“As a club we decided on what the funds would be used for, and took a vote on the options available, which included support for shelter and education.

“We decided on the animals as we felt they could be used to help a family make a living for themselves. Next on my agenda is my growing collection of 5p pieces.”
