SOMERSET NEWS: Some weekend relief for roadworks disruption

TEMPORARY traffic lights at roadworks on the A38 at North Petherton have been removed this weekend (August 22-23, 2015).

It comes in response to recent feedback from commuters and local businesses that the works were causing weekend delays.

Somerset County Council has now come up with a solution that means the temporary traffic lights can be removed this weekend and next weekend’s Bank Holiday (August 29-31, 2015).

The council’s highways and transport spokesman, Cllr David Fothergill, said: “We have listened to concerns from commuters, residents and businesses and taken their feedback on board.SOMERSET NEWS: Some weekend relief for roadworks disruption

“Most importantly we have made changes with the aim of easing weekend congestion over the Bank Holiday weekend and through the summer period.

“The temporary lights will still be in operation Monday to Friday but will now be manually operated to aid traffic flow. The traffic management will be reviewed at the beginning of September.

“We apologise for the inconvenience caused, but the scheme itself is long awaited by many and once complete, will be an integral part of an off-road cycle and walking route all the way from Old Road in North Petherton to Bridgwater town centre.

“This route will ultimately provide 2.5-miles of safe cycling and walking facility – part of the 6.5-miles of planned routes from The Bridgwater Way.”

The Bridgwater Way is a sustainable transport project aimed at transforming travel in Bridgwater. Funded by the Department for Transport, the project has worked with residents, businesses and schools to promote sustainable travel.
