YEOVIL NEWS: Speedwatch plans for Houndstone and Brympton

SPEEDING motorists using estate roads as a rat run on Houndstone on the outskirts of Yeovil have prompted a parish councillor to set up a meeting to discuss a plan to put the brakes on drivers.

Roe Avenue and Boundary Road on Houndstone have become popular with drivers wanting to avoid the notoriously-busy Asda roundabout.

Those on Lufton Way can turn down into Old Preston Road, Badger Heights, Bond Street, Roe Avenue and Boundary Road before going onto Bluebell Road and coming to the roundabout at Palmers – thus avoiding the Asda gridlock. The problems escalate in the early morning and late afternoon rushhours with motorists driving to and from work on Lufton trading estate. YEOVIL NEWS: Speedwatch plans for Houndstone and Brympton

But Angie Ashmore, of Brympton Parish Council, has become concerned at how fast some drivers are using these roads - particularly Roe Avenue and Boundary Road – in a bid to win a few seconds of time.

“I have recently heard back from the beat officer for this area,” she said in a letter delivered to residents.

“She was happy for me to go-ahead and arrange a meeting with Speedwatch to address the problems with the speeding in our area.”

Cllr Ashmore has set up the meeting for Wednesday, June 10, 2015, at 7.30pm to be held at the Paragon Laundry premises, opposite Yeovil Town Football Club, in its conference room.

Stuart Hunter, chairman of the South Somerset Community Speedwatch organisation, will be at the meeting.

“He will explain to us what is required to get us started in monitoring the traffic and hopefully put an end to the speeding that we have all had to endure recently,” added Cllr Ashmore.

Although the problem of speeding on these narrow estate roads is becoming an increasing hazard – it does bring the need to improve the Asda roundabout sooner rather than later even more to the fore.
