SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Hip Yack Poetry Shack is coming to Crewkerne!

NATIONALLY-RENOWNED poets will perform in various locations around Crewkerne town centre later this month on a day of fun-filled cabaret poetry.

The event – to be held on Saturday, May 16, 2015 - has been organised by South Somerset District Council, Hip Yak Poetry Shack and the ABCD group – A Better Crewkerne and District.

Following the success of Theatre in the Shops, which took place in Crewkerne last year, ABCD secured funds to put on a similar event using poetry.

Hip Yack Poetry Shack will bring their hand made poetry comedy cabaret to the streets and businesses of Crewkerne with an event that combines poetry with shopping.

During April, Hip Yak Poetry Shack has carried out a number of poetry writing workshops with local residents to create the spoken word pieces which have been inspired by people and places in the town.SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: Hip Yack Poetry Shack is coming to Crewkerne!

On May 16 from 10.30am until 4pm, seven professional performance poets will perform those spoken word pieces either inside or just outside a number of shops and businesses around the town centre, including the farmers market.

The poems are varied with some being funny and others more philosophical. Each piece will be performed a number of times, giving audiences plenty of opportunity to have an entertaining day and shop, watch a performance, go for coffee, watch another poet, do lunch, take in another performance and go shopping again.

During the evening from 7pm to 9pm, Hip Yak Poetry Shack will lead a poetry pub crawl performing their raucous cabaret style pieces in the Kings Arms, The George and the Royal   Oak.

Diane Butler, chair of ABCD, said: “This event will be great fun with something for everyone, and provides an enjoyable way for visitors to discover what Crewkerne has to offer”.

Keep an eye on the Creative Crewkerne Facebook page for more details and closer to the performance date, a programme will be available on the Crewkerne Local Information website at www.aboutcrewkerne.co.uk.

Programmes can also be obtained from various locations in the town on performance day.

A British Sign Language Interpreter will be in attendance for most of the morning performances – check the programme for details.

Funding for the project came from the Arts Council, South Somerset District Council and Crewkerne Town Council.
