SOMERSET NEWS: Awards for healthcare apprentices across the county

A SPECIAL awards ceremony has been held to celebrate the success of the first clinical healthcare apprentices to have gone through the training system with Somerset Care, Yeovil College and Yeovil District Hospital.

Nearly 30 students working in Somerset Care establishments across the county were the first to take this course, which is designed for healthcare assistants over the age of 19.

The apprentices completed their training at Yeovil Hospital and in their workplaces in Yeovil, Taunton, Bridgwater, Wiveliscombe, Wellington, Wincanton, Melksham and Somerton.

Jane Townson, lead executive director of Somerset Care, said: “I’m delighted that so many Somerset Care staff have attained this qualification and looking forward to the next cohort of students starting in April.”

This apprenticeship is one of many courses provided through Yeovil College’s partnership with Yeovil District Hospital, all aimed at helping students develop the qualities and knowledge employers are looking for and filling a well-publicised skills gap faced by the health and care industry.

Yeovil Hospital’s Academy manager, Debbie Matthewson, said “It was an absolute pleasure to work with Somerset Care and Yeovil College to provide much needed educational support to the county’s health and care sector.”

Yeovil College’s curriculum area manager for health, care and early years, Heidi Amor, said “It was wonderful to see so many apprentices here receiving their certificates, supported by so many friends and colleagues as well as representatives from all three training partners.”
