YEOVIL NEWS: Marathon day will be for the whole family day

PLANS for Yeovil’s first full marathon are picking up pace and promises to be an event for the whole family with activities including bouncy castles, a barbeque and a free children’s Fun Run.

The aim of the whole event – which takes place on Sunday, June 14, and is hosted by Yeovil Town Road Running Club - is to raise money for the Royal Navy & Royal Marines Charity and the Yeovilton Military Wives Choir.

Event organiser and race director at Yeovil Town RRC, Bryn Phillips, said it was important to make the event something for the family.

“I wanted to make the Marathon a little bit different to most races I have been to,” he said. “A lot of attention is always given to the athletes competing, which is rightly so, but what about those left at the start/finish areas that are there to support?”YEOVIL NEWS: Marathon day will be for the whole family day

Bryn added: “With most races there seems to be no thought to the families waiting at the end for their partners to finish, and having children myself I know how quickly bored they get. My solution was to create and focus on the families as well, to do this we have created a Children’s Fun Run.

“I am delighted that South Somerset District Council and Tony Pryce Yeovil have chosen to sponsor this event. I am hoping that being able to make the Fun Run free that parents will be encouraged to get their children and hopefully themselves into athletics and sport.”

Haydn Potts, from Tony Pryce Sports, added:  "Tony Pryce Sports are proud to be involved with Yeovil's first full marathon and sponsor the children's fun run alongside SSDC.

“We pride ourselves in helping to support key events like this that encourage individuals to push themselves and achieve a goal that means so much to them.”

The council’s leisure spokesman, Cllr Sylvia Seal, said: “We are delighted to support the Children’s Fun Run.

“It is an excellent idea to integrate the activities for young people and channel their enthusiasm and energy while raising money for very worthwhile causes.”
