SOMERSET NEWS: Car sharing is proving a hit in Bridgwater

MORE and more people are leaving their cars at home and sharing their journeys in Bridgwater - thanks to a campaign driving home the benefits of sharing a lift to work.

Over 30 organisations across Bridgwater have now signed up to support The Bridgwater Way’s new #pays2share campaign, including Morrisons, Mulberry, EDF Energy, Refresco Gerber, Toolstation, Crown Paints and Somerset Film.

Sharing a lift now and again with a friend or colleague can cut your fuel costs in half and help reduce local traffic congestion and car parking problems, as well as benefiting the environment. In short, it pays to share.

Funded by the Department for Transport, the Bridgwater Way includes 6.5miles of new or improved cycle paths and walking routes and a host of activities to encourage sustainable transport and ease congestion. It is being delivered through a partnership of Somerset County Council, Sustrans and Sedgemoor District Council.

The Bridgwater   Way team is encouraging commuters to start sharing and saving now, by registering for free at www.somersetliftshare.com .

Somerset County Council’s highways and transport spokesman, Cllr Harvey Siggs, said: “It’s great that the #pays2share campaign is encouraging people to think more about their journeys.

“I would encourage not just Bridgwater but all Somerset residents to look into car sharing – it could help keep a few more pennies in your pocket by sharing travel costs.”

Many local businesses are also promoting the #pays2share campaign to their staff and a series of Facebook ads are running until March.

More than 4,400 people have now visited the website (www.somerset.liftshare.com) since the campaign launched last November.

Anyone who signs up to the campaign online at www.somersetliftshare.com before March 23, 2015, is in with a chance of winning a Kindle Fire.
