THE School in a Bag charity team have thanked everyone who supported their 18-hour fundraising marathon at Tesco in Yeovil.

Volunteers manned the tills at the main Tesco store in town yesterday (Tuesday, December 23, 2014) from 6am through to midnight and helped shoppers pack up their shopping.CHRISTMAS 2014: School in a Bag team completes bag-packing marathon!

Luke Simon, of the SIAB charity, said: “Thank you to all the volunteers – it wouldn’t have been possible otherwise!

“And thank you to all the people who donated - your support is very much appreciated."

School in a Bag was formed as an offshoot of the Piers Simon Appeal – first set up not long after former Preston School and Yeovil College student Piers Simon was killed in the Asian tsunami of Boxing Day 2004 while holidaying in Thailand.

Since then the charity – led by his brother Luke Simon, who survived the tsunami, and has appeared in several TV documentaries to commemorate this year’s tenth anniversary – has helped to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds to fund projects in areas around the globe devastated by natural disaster.

Thousands of SchoolBags have also been distributed to children around the globe. Each bag contains useful school equipment such as books, pens and pencils, as well as eating utensils – things the children would not normally have.

The money collected during yesterday's bag packing at Tesco will be counted over the coming days and a final total will be announced, but Luke and the team are hoping to have raised around £3,000.
