YEOVIL NEWS: Big bag pack at Tesco for School in a Bag charity

ORGANISERS and volunteer supporters of the School in a Bag charity will be at the main Tesco store in Yeovil today (Tuesday, December 23, 2014) for a bag-packing marathon.

They will be at the store from 6am right through until midnight – a mere 18 hours of helping to pack shopping for shoppers at the tills in return for donations.YEOVIL NEWS: Big bag pack at Tesco for School in a Bag charity

School in a Bag was formed as an offshoot of the Piers Simon Appeal – first set up not long after former Preston School and Yeovil College student Piers Simon was killed in the Asian tsunami of Boxing Day 2004 while holidaying in Thailand.

Since then the charity – led by his brother Luke Simon, who survived the tsunami, and has appeared in several TV documentaries to commemorate the tenth anniversary – has helped to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds to fund projects in areas around the globe devastated by natural disaster.

Thousands of SchoolBags have also been distributed to children around the globe. Each bag contains useful school equipment such as books, pens and pencils, as well as eating utensils – things the children would not normally have.

Last year’s bag-packing event at Tesco raised £2,185.43 and organisers are hoping to reach £3,000 this time around – enough money to fund 200 SchoolBags.

A documentary entitled Tsunami: Survivors’ Stories appeared on ITV last night (Monday, December 22, 2014) and featured Luke and his memories of that fateful day on Boxing Day 2004 when his much-loved brother was swept away by the water.

Anyone wanting to help with the bag packing at Tesco today to support the case  – just pop along to the store.
