YEOVIL COLLEGE NEWS: Student designs for cheese-maker calendar

DESIGNS by 12 Yeovil College students have been chosen for Barber’s 2015 calendar - sent by the prestigious cheese-maker to customers all over the world.

The family-run business has been making cheese in Ditcheat since 1833 and supplies retailers including Harrods and Fortnum and Mason, as well as specialist food outlets.  The company has customers worldwide, including Australia, the USA, Chile and China, all of which will receive the calendar featuring work by YeovilCollege students.

Company directors Charlie and Giles Barber along with Graphic Designer Catherine Hornsby-Smith of CM Design visited the College to decide which images to use.

Art and design students Georgette Smith, 17, of Martock, and Jordan Osborne, also 17, of Yeovil, won the top prizes.YEOVIL COLLEGE NEWS: Student designs for cheese-maker calendar

Joshua Pooler, John Evans, Ashley Pogson, Tamara Lewis, Emma Sewell, Fiona McKenna, Charlotte Isaacs, Ryan Gusman, Callum Trowbridge and Ali McQueen also had work chosen for the calendar.  All the winners received vouchers to buy art supplies.

Giles Barber said: “We were absolutely blown away by the excellent work the students produced and the effort that they clearly put in.  It was hard to decide the winners and we actually ended up with two overall rather than one.  These students are a really good advert for the college.”

Winner Jordan added: “My original idea was to use a traditional cheese shape and put a twist on it.  I like cheese and went through a block of Barber’s while working on this project.  I think working on live briefs is really useful because it gets you into the idea of work and helps you understand what it’s like to work with different people.  It helps get you ready for working with clients later on.”
