YEOVIL NEW: Unique group looks for new members

A UNIQUE group in Yeovil which aims to give adults with Asperger Syndrome and high functioning autism a chance to socialise with others is looking for new members.

The Yeovil Pub Hub has been running for more than ten years and meets once a month at a pub in the town for a drink and a chat.

The group offers a friendly atmosphere with the support of three volunteers who have many years of experience of working with and supporting those on the autistic spectrum.

People attending must be over 18 and able to order drinks or food at the bar for themselves and are encouraged not to attend with carers.

Volunteer Deborah Gingell said that for many young people and adults on the autistic spectrum, being able to go into a pub was often a daunting prospect.

“Our group facilitates a friendly and easy going atmosphere where members can choose to just come down to the pub for an evening out,” she said.

“There are often social groups for children, but once they reach the age of 18 this provision usually stops.

“There is no pressure to come every month and the majority of our members have been enjoying the group for many years.

“People on the autistic spectrum can find socialising difficult and we aim to make that a lot easier by providing them with the support to be able to make that first step.”
