YEOVIL NEWS: Ken Anthony Hair Design celebrates 25 years

HAIR salon owner Kenny Whittle is marking this week the 25th anniversary of being based in Princes Street in Yeovil.

It was on October 1, 1989, that Ken moved in to the former wool shop in Princes Street with his Ken Anthony Hair Design salon.

Previously he had been based in Tabernacle Lane for about a year with Strands.

But now 25 years on and Kenny cannot believe how quickly the quarter of century has flown by which has seen him cut thousands of heads of hair in the salon in Princes   Street.

“It’s gone by very quickly,” he told the Yeovil Press. “Hair styles have changed and so have products, but hairdressing itself is still the same.”YEOVIL NEWS: Ken Anthony Hair Design celebrates 25 years

Kenny, a former Westfield School student, admitted that he has “no idea” how he became a hairdresser – he was all set to join the Royal Navy as a chef.

He had had a “Saturday job” at the former Channings toy store in Princes Street, but his life path became set in stone when he got a job at the David Keith Hair Design salon in Yeovil.

“I’ve no idea really how I got into hairdressing, but it all started when a mate of mine told me about a job at David Keith’s,” he said. “But I certainly didn't think I’d end up having a career in hairdressing.”

Kenny, aged 51, is now one of the longest-serving hairdressers in the town and is rightly proud to have been in Princes Street for 25 years.

“There are a few other shops and businesses which have been in Princes Street for that length of time, but not many,” he said.

Also with him during the past 25 years has been fellow hairdresser Stuart Hann who started in the salon as the “Saturday lad.”

But this week Kenny was delighted to present Stuart with a superb watch to commemorate his long service.
