YEOVIL NEWS: Ice bucket challenge for Lord's Larder

STAFF at Yeovil-based Yarlington Housing Group used the current social media craze of the “ice bucket challenge” to raise money for the Lord’s Larder food bank.

As summer slowly begins her exit, it is hard to think of winter chills and heating bills. But colder weather is not far away, which can mean difficult choices for many families.

With over ten per cent of all households in fuel poverty, many are faced with the choice to ‘heat or eat’ and an increasing number are forced to use food banks to feed their families.YEOVIL NEWS: Ice bucket challenge for Lord's Larder

Employees at Yarlington have now experienced real cold to raise money for the Lord’s Larder food bank, the company’s chosen charity of the year.

Yarlington chief executive, Gary Orr, was joined by members of staff as their colleagues paid to drench them in icy cold water.

Over £100 was raised from those in the dry who were happy to swell charity funds as bucketful after bucketful found its way over heads, down necks and even into shoes.

“It was very, very cold,” said Gary. “But compared to what some people go through all winter long, it was a small price to pay.

“We work closely with the Lords Larder all through the year, referring those in need to them, and we know the difference that they make to many people within our communities. We are happy that we are able to help in this way.”

Being aware of the impact that fuel poverty has on families, Yarlington has appointed two new energy advisors to the team, to work with residents to identify ways in which people can reduce their energy bills and make sure they are taking advantage of the best deals available.
