SOMERSET NEWS: Chemical spill at leisure centre

A LEISURE centre swimming pool and restaurant were evacuated this afternoon (Wednesday, July 2, 2014) following a chemical spill.

Three fire engines from Cheddar, Wells and Frome were mobilised at just before 5pm to the incident at a leisure centre in Axbridge Road, Cheddar.

Firefighters discovered a small leak of chlorine gas within the premises and asked for ambulance support after a man in his 20s needed medical assistance.

A spokesman for the Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service told the Yeovil Press: “Crews then worked in breathing apparatus using a gas monitor in an attempt to gain readings of levels of chlorine gas whilst awaiting the arrival of the environment protection unit from North Tawton.

“After further investigations the leak was found to have originated in the pump room and with the aid of the chlorine gas monitor, levels of the gas were showing as being low.”

Firefighters removed the chemical drum and washed down the area to make it safe.
