RACE FOR LIFE 2014: Cancer - we are coming to get you!

AROUND 2,000 ladies – of all ages and from all walks of life– descended on Sherborne Castle this morning (Sunday, June 22, 2014) to help raise money for Cancer Research.

It is now hoped that the entrants in today’s Race for Life will have raised thousands of pounds for the charity.

For many of those who took part it was a poignant moment as they were running in memory of friends and loved ones who had died because of cancer.

Beautiful weather set with the splendid backdrop of Sherborne Castle ensured that today was a truly memorable occasion for all those taking part and their family and friends who had gone along to support.

Groups, organisations and workplaces joined forces to enter as teams including Beales Babes from the Beales store in Yeovil – still better known to many from the older fraternity of the town as Denners! Although known as Beales Babes for Race for Life, the Yeovil Press suggested that they could also be known as Denners Dollies.

There was also a team from Yeovil Women’s Hospital’s gynaecology outpatients department known as the GOPD Girls. They were wearing teal colours to represent ovarian cancer awareness.

Another Yeovil team was from Earls Sandwich Bar in Silver Street - aptly named Earls Girls.

There were plenty of entrants in fancy dress and weird and wonderful hair-dos, while there was a sea of pink across the Sherborne Castle grounds with ladies wearing Race for Life t-shirts.

After a warm-up exercise, the runners, joggers and walkers were set off on their way for the 5k challenge.

The first lady to finish the course was Dawn Holley, from Ditcheat, who works for Paul Nicholls Racing.

But although Dawn was the first to pass the finishing line – all of the entrants were winners today.

And they all had one message for cancer: "We're coming to get you!"
