SOUTH SOMERSET NEWS: D-Day exhibition at Chard Museum

D-Day 70th anniversary remembered at Chard Museum

PEOPLE are being encouraged to visit Chard Museum this week which has a D-Day exhibition to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the “beginning of the end” of the Second World War.D-Day 70th anniversary remembered at Chard Museum

Displays have been put together by Peter and Dee Manley along with a tribute to local man, Wilf Townsend, who as a sub-lieutenant at the time of D-Day was the Chief Signals Officer.

It was Wilf’s job to guide the boats into the beaches of Normandy on the day and ChardMuseum is lucky enough to have on display the actual flags that he used to perform this vital task.

Museum trustee, Linda Vijeh, who got involved due to her role as a councillor on South Somerset District Council, said: “It is well worth coming to see this and other artefacts.”

Another museum trustee, Roy Kibblewhite, remembers – as a young boy – what it was like to hear the news of the D-Day landings on June 6, 1944.

And Linda added: “There will be many others in the Chard and Somerset area who will also remember this turning point in the outcome of the Second World War and will want to see the artefacts we have at the museum.”
