YEOVIL NEWS: College girls do the town proud at rugby

YEOVIL College’s ladies’ rugby team has given an outstanding performance at the Rosslyn Park National Schools Sevens competition.

They beat rival teams to reach the final and receive the prestigious Spirit of Rugby award for the second year running.

Overall, 16 school, sixth form and college teams from across the country took part in the tournament.

Yeovil College’s team included Antonia Mansfield, 18, of Yeovil; Sophie Baruwa, 18, of Yeovil; Megan Fox, 16, of Yeovil; Georgie Evans, 17, of Yeovil; Ginnie Johnston, 18, of Yeovil; Lucy Flynn, 17, of Martock; Jaz Brazier, 18, of Yeovil; Courtney Bishop, 18, of Yeovil; and Kelly Coombes, 16, of Sherborne.  They were captained by Sarah Langford, 17, of Warminster.YEOVIL NEWS: College girls do the town proud at rugby

The Yeovil College team triumphed over Wales’ premier sixth form St David School, independent King Henry VIII School and specialist sports college Perins School in the group stages before meeting sixth form Peter Symonds in the semi-finals, winning the match 40pts-5.

The final was a hard fought contest between Yeovil College and Clyst Vale Community College, ending with a victory for Clyst Vale 15pts-12.

After the tournament and for the second year running, the Yeovil College team was delighted to receive the Spirit of Rugby award, which recognises teamwork, discipline and enthusiasm for the sport.

Team coach Nadine Sheehan said: “All members of the team are true ambassadors for Yeovil College and its students.

“They are inspirational and show that with determination and team work anything is possible.

“As a coach, I am so happy that I was fortunate enough to be a part of the team’s success and journey and look forward Yeovil College’s return to the tournament next year.”

Captain Sarah Langford added: “As captain, I am very proud that our team did so well and got as far it did.”
