SOMERSET NEWS: Have you been victim of motorway breakdown scam?

POLICE have announced that a 44-year-old man was arrested on Saturday (March 29, 2014) at Taunton Deane Services on the M5 in connection with an ongoing fraud investigation.

This investigation – involving police forces throughout the South West - was launched after officers received a number of reports from motorists, at various motorway services, explaining that they had been approached by a man claiming to have broken down and asking to borrow cash to travel to Cornwall.SOMERSET NEWS: Have you been victim of motorway breakdown scam?

A police spokesman said: “The man accompanied several victims to a cash machine, in order to withdraw cash. In each case, the money was never seen again.”

A patrolling officer from the Roads Policing Unit spotted and arrested a man at Taunton Dean Services, who is now helping police with their enquiries.

“We are keen to hear from any other motorists who may have been approached by someone asking for cash at motorway services, in our force area, in similar circumstances to that described above,” added the police spokesman.
