Fairmead students learn more about the council

SIXTH-FORM students from Fairmead School visited South Somerset District Council’s offices last week in Yeovil in support of their Life Skills Curriculum.

Students met with a variety of different officers from the district council and discussed the work undertaken by each service and their roles within the district council.

The council’s democratic services manager Angie Cox explained about the authority’s meetings and the decision-making process.

Students then visited various departments including the council’s contact centre where they had the opportunity to see the team handling calls from members of the public about a variety of services.

Council leader, Cllr Ric Pallister, said: “It was a privilege to have Fairmead’s new Sixth Form visit us for the first time.

“The school is so much a part of our community and having the Council play a part, however small, in furthering their broader education about the society they live in was a real pleasure.”

Fairmead’s Sarah Harding added: “Other planned visits to the council’s offices are now in place to secure workplace opportunities for our students.

“We all had a fantastic afternoon meeting and talking to officers from different departments about the work they do to keep South Somerset running. A big thank you to Mr Pallister and his team.”
