Emily receives letter from Prince Charles for flood invitiation

A MEMBER of staff at South Somerset District Council has received a personal letter from Prince Charles following his recent visit to the flood-hit county.

The council’s scrutiny manager Emily McGuinness had written to the Prince of Wales inviting him to this part of the world to see for himself the devastation caused by the flooding on the Somerset Levels.

The Prince has now told Emily in a letter that it was a pleasure to meet her during his high-profile visit on February 4, 2014, although he was sorry it was as a result of the “misery” caused by flooding.

He said that he hoped his visit had raised the awareness of the problems on the Levels which villagers and farmers were facing for a second successive year.Emily receives letter from Prince Charles for flood invitiation

The Prince said he wanted to be kept informed of how the Somerset Levels were recovering from the flooding which he described as a “disaster.”

The letter was read out at last night’s (Thursday, February 27, 2014) meeting of South Somerset District Council in Yeovil at which Emily was present, albeit she slightly embarrassed by the attention.

One councillor suggested tongue-in-cheek that she should receive a pay rise, while another joked that she should now be called Lady Emily.

The Prince’s letter was read out by council chairman, Cllr Mike Best, and he thanked Emily and all of the authority’s officers and staff for the efforts they were making with regards the floods and storms of recent weeks.
